You may want to talk to your players about how zombies work, and if they actually find them frustrating or not.
#DND OGRE ZOMBIE DROP PC#
Also if you have a PC with Radiant Damage who isn’t using it, you can give them an Arcane check (because zombies are made with spells) to clue them in. If you don’t want a fight to have a random chance to just keep dragging on, or if the party generally doesn’t do a lot of damage per attack, has a bad class makeup for fighting zombies, or not very clever, use Skeletons or something similar instead that actually dies at zero HP.

The DM does need to know if they should use a Zombie or not (which I can see would be a problem for new DMs). So the party’s class makeup is going to have a big impact on how much of the group’s resources a fight against zombies is going to take. If you have a small group without a variety of ranged classes, or low damage output per attack, and no radiant damage, they become a lot more dangerous. Regular Zombies have a pretty low damage output, they don’t use tactics and are just stupid (so PCs can lure them into locations where they have the advantage), and PCs can generally outrun them. The Zombie Ogre different story, very dangerous, still didn’t kill anyone. I’ve never had anyone knocked to zero HP by a regular zombie. Small numbers of Regular zombies just are not that scary to a large group. So a DM has to know they essentially have an unpredictable amount of extra HP. But my players understand the underlying math pretty well and tend to think in a positive way. My players were not frustrated with their skill, they were horrified by the zombies making some really hard saving throws time after time. The whole point of zombies is the horror of not knowing when they are actually going to die. But you could have games where zombies just die to one attack, because the DM's dice roll low. Which was only 1 extra round for it to survive, as it was the only monster in the fight. The one time I used a Zombie Ogre it made 6 saves in a row before it died. I’ve only had one zombie die the first time it hit zero, from a critical hit. Since I have 4-6 players at my game, this generally means zombies survive around 1-3 extra rounds (my players always focus on taking out wounded targets). I’ve had zombies make 6 or 7 saves in a row, I don’t think I’ve had one make less than 3 saves (my dice just love zombies). I’ve used zombies three times (at level 1 and twice at level 2). I run Zombies just as Sage Genesis described.
